Principal's Message
A warm welcome and best wishes for a great year to all staff, students and families as we commence this significant year in the history of our school. 2023 marks the 95th anniversary since the College was established by the Sisters of Our Lady of Sion.
One can only imagine the courage and commitment of the Sisters as they embarked upon the purchase of the land on which our school is situated at a time of significant global change. Sandwiched between the conclusion of World War 1 and the emerging Great Depression they placed their faith in God and their own dedication to begin what is now a significant school community within the Box Hill and surrounding area.
Next week we will be joined by the Sisters and members of our College Board as staff and students celebrate our anniversary at St Patrick’s cathedral followed by lunch in the Treasury Gardens. I hope this occasion will remain with our students in the years ahead.
Today we recognised the Class of 2022 and in particular the 31 students who attained an ATAR above 90, the Duces of each study and the current Year 12 students who attained a study score above 40 in their accelerated study last year.
This is also a significant achievement given 2022 was the first year of face-to-face learning experienced by the Class of 2022 since they were in Year 9. Throughout last year, they demonstrated commitment and resolve to working hard to achieve their best. They have set a benchmark in how they approached their studies which I hope inspires all students to emulate in the coming years.
By now families will have seen the final establishment of our demountable classrooms and the beginning of the next stage of our Masterplan. Students have commented to me how comfortable the demountable classrooms are and how they are much better than expected. This is welcome feedback as we continued to work throughout January to ensure the spaces effectively support learning and provide all resources students will need. We have named this area the Olive Grove to recognise the adjacent olive trees which commemorate the Sisters who protected Jewish children and families during the Holocaust. We hope the naming of the area strengthens students’ understanding of our history and Sionian legacy.
It gives me great pleasure to welcome the newest members of our community, our Year 7 students. They have arrived at the commencement of our 95th anniversary and as I explained to them at their Orientation Day last November, they will be the Class of 2028 when we celebrate the 100th anniversary. I hope they enjoy this honour and experience.
I also welcome the following students who have joined our school this year:
Year 8: Lauren B (8 Blue), Kary W (8 Gold) and Jasmine O (8 Silver)
Year 9: Charlotte R (9 Purple) and Jessica C (9 Purple)
Year 10: Arabella R (10 White) and Natalie Y (10 White)
Year 11: Natalia T (11 Silver)
Welcome to returning staff who were on leave for part or all of 2022:
Sofia Stagnitta, Heather Stewart, Alex Bleazby, Ellie Van Der Westhuizen, Cara Callum, Katrina Gurciullo and Pamela Ioannidis who will join the Counselling team.
A warm welcome to new staff some of whom are replacing staff on leave this year:
Chrizelle Cortina (Science), Amy Garnham (Religious Education), Patricia Graham (Maths), Naomi Linossier (Head of Sport), Fiona McDonald (English), Karen Read (Food Studies), Giulia Tomat (French/Italian), Kirsty White (Food Studies), Isabella Votsis (English/Humanities) and Christina Kambelos (ICT Manager), Claire Jenkins (School Psychologist), Jesslyn Drew (Learning Support Officer), Jemima Stafford (Learning Support Officer), Ryan McCluskey (Instrumental Instructor)
Top Achiever Assembly
At our Top Achiever assembly this morning, we also announced our 2023 College theme:
With a Grateful Heart
I shared the following thoughts with our students and hope that they encourage discussion within families as the year progresses.
Our 2023 theme invites each and every person to reflect on how we actually live our lives.
Two thousand years ago, the philosopher Plutarch wrote that many if not most people can miss what is good in their lives, because we too often focus on the unpleasant elements.
We are all familiar with the tendency to look at what is missing rather than what we have.
This year our theme invites us to count our blessings, notice simple pleasures, and acknowledge the abundance already here. I hope it truly helps us to see the world through a lens where every moment is an opportunity for living gratefully. When we live with a grateful heart, even through the difficult times, I think we see our life and our world in a different way.
The symbol for our theme is this plant. We have intentionally chosen a plant, because like living gratefully, it requires patience, nourishment and attention, and with the right conditions, it will flourish.
When we live gratefully, we overcome challenges and create greater harmony in our relationships and our world. I hope that throughout the year, this theme helps to bring joy to your life and through your actions and words, I hope is brings joy to all with whom you interact.
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7
With every blessing for the fortnight ahead.

Deputy Principal Faith and Mission – John McInerney
Leaders in schools hold such a privileged position. At the very start of a school year, we get the opportunity to work with new and ongoing staff as we prepare for the gift of education of the students in our care. As leaders, we often have the chance to share our hopes and dreams with others. I reflected on this as I watched the first Pope Video produced for the year.
Some may know that Pope Francis produces a video each month that has a particular focus. In January, it was for educators. In it, Francis proposes that educators 'add new content to their teaching: fraternity.' He invites them to 'become community builders' and prays that they may be 'credible witnesses, teaching fraternity rather than confrontation.'
Educators do much more than teach mathematics, geography, or history: 'Educators are witnesses who not only impart their mental knowledge, but also their convictions, their commitment to life.'
The Pope reminds us that, 'educators know how to handle the three languages well: that of the head, that of the heart, and that of the hands, all in harmony. And hence the joy in communicating.'
Hopefully this is what we will experience here at Our Lady of Sion College in 2023.
Deputy Principal Learning and Teaching – Allison Stott
The expert in anything was once a beginner.Helen Hayes
It is so lovely to walk the hallways and classrooms and to hear the chatter of students in active learning again. It has definitely been a positive start to the year with all students making the transition to the next year level successfully.
There is lots to look forward to in the next few weeks. On Friday 10 February we welcomed back our Year 12 2022 Top Achieving students and recognised their great efforts and celebrated the pathways they are about to embark upon. The Vocational Major students have already completed their Food Handling Certificate and will shortly complete their barista training. The GSV program is well and truly underway as is the planning for the College Musical.
As other students did at the end of 2022, our Year 7 students are currently completing the PAT tests, as well as the AGAT, so that teachers can make informed decisions about the next steps in their learning. In March, our Years 7 and 9 students will sit the 2023 NAPLAN tests. More information about this will follow however if families would like to learn more about how to best support their child, please visit the VCAA website. We also now have access to the VCE VCAA data service allowing us to interrogate the rigour of our VCE courses. The College uses the various data sources available to us to inform our teaching and learning programs, ensuring that each student is ‘named and known’ as well as informing our staff professional learning program.
And as a final follow up from 2022, the awards data has now been rectified and students will be appropriately recognised. We congratulate Asha Q, Elouise P and Eliza A from Year 7, Siena F from Year 8, Martina G from Year 9, Emma G and Emma S from Year 10 and Frances W from Year 11 for being awarded Dux of their year levels. A big congratulations to the following students for receiving a Ratisbonne Award: Bianca G, Matilda P, Claire R, Abbey G, Olivia O'F, Imogen B, Mietta d S, Zoe F, Lily L, Katia T, Abigail H and Ava S.
Deputy Principal Student Wellbeing – Christine Kralj
Each year the first day of school at Our Lady of Sion College begins with the Year 12 student leaders and a number of staff standing at the cherry red gates welcoming new Year 7s students to the College. It was wonderful to see so many happy smiling families coming into the College, having their photos taken, catching up with other families and then farewelling their daughter as she bravely walked to the EC building to start her Sion journey.
For many students, this was the first really significant transition that they have taken on in their young lives. I imagined many did so with a nervous energy, but also a sense that there were many friendships and opportunities in front of them.
By all reports, not only have the Year 7s settled in well to 2023, but the rest of the student community appears keen to take on the new challenges that a move up in year level provides. Good transitions take time and patience, and we want parents to know that they and their daughters are part of a learning community that shares a common desire to do one's best and a set of values that fosters an environment that is supportive, cohesive and inclusive.
Our goal is to partner with parents/carers to help the young people in our care to embrace learning and to build respectful and caring relationships. We made a great start to this partnership at the Parent Information evenings that were held this week and were well attended by the community.
2023 Pastoral Team
It is with great pleasure that I introduce the Pastoral Team for 2023:
Student wellbeing is at the heart of the College’s educational approaches and the pastoral team is keen to form strong partnerships with our parents/carers.
2022 was a year to return, heal and re-establish routines after being away from the school onsite environment. If we are going to truly help our students reach their potential, 2023 is the time to focus on resetting College expectations and supporting students to optimise their learning through feedback and improvement strategies, hold students to high expectations of behaviour and foster independence and self-efficacy.
Change of address, contact number or health concern?
Please ensure that we have the most up to date contact details for you and that you have supplied the College with an emergency contact number of someone who can come to the College to pick up your daughter. If your daughter has had a change of living arrangements or in her health, please ensure that you contact College Reception via email reception@sion.catholic.edu.au We want to be proactive in caring for your daughter and can only do this if we have the correct information.
I look forward to working with you and your daughter this year.
In Remembrance
Our particular thoughts and prayers go to Grace T (10 Gold) and Olivia F (7 Silver) whose grandmothers passed away. Also, to Mrs Gail Amato, Languages Learning Leader and 11 Blue Homeroom Teacher, whose mother recently passed away.
We remember Grace, Olivia, Mrs Amato and their families in a special way at this sad time.
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and may your perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls and the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace, Amen.
Year Level News
Year 12 – Leanne Anderson, Wellbeing and Growth Leader
As this is our first newsletter for 2023, I would like to extend a warm welcome back to the new school year. I am very much looking forward to working with our current Year 12 students and you as their parents and guardians.
Thank you to those of you who attended the Information Evening on Tuesday night. If you were unable to attend, the presentation was sent to you via email on Wednesday afternoon. Please do not hesitate to contact Dale Hunter or myself if you have any queries or would like further clarification regarding the content of the presentation.
The evening also provided the opportunity for the Year 12 Homeroom teachers to be introduced.
We are very much looking forward to supporting our Year 12 students and sharing in the events and experiences that will be a part of their last year at Our Lady of Sion College.
Year 11 – Beth Amos, Wellbeing and Growth Leader
Welcome back to all Year 11 students and their families for 2023! After a much-needed summer break, the Year 11s now start the new year as senior students residing in the Notre Dame Centre. Returning from the summer break always brings a sense of hope and excitement for the year to come, but may bring a lot of worries regarding the ‘unknown’. The unknown of VCE and VM will soon become familiar to our students, but for now, there are new routines, processes, and plenty of questions to be asked. So far, I have been impressed by this group of young people, stepping into a new space with, new teachers and peers - with confidence and ready to engage in learning.
During this transition period, the Year 11s have the opportunity to develop new relationships with their peers, find their feet in Homeroom and their new subjects. Moreover, they will be working closely with their subject teachers to navigate their approach to learning and engaging in subjects that they enjoy.
The Year 11s also have the support of their Homeroom teacher throughout the year. We thank them in anticipation for their ongoing support, assistance, and guidance for your child.
The support and care for your child rely on a partnership between the College and the broader community. Please contact your child’s Homeroom teacher or me, should you have any concerns or questions throughout the year.
Year 9 – Jordyn Frood, Wellbeing and Growth Leader
Welcome to Year 9 2023, I hope that you and your family had a beautiful holiday and that you are ready to be a part of your child’s Year 9 journey.
A big welcome to the enthusiastic and experienced Year 9 Pastoral Team (Homeroom teachers):
I would also like to extend a warm welcome to Charlotte R (9 Purple) who is new to Our Lady of Sion College this year, and also to Jessica C (9 Purple) who is returning to the College. We are thrilled to have you in Year 9 and hope you feel welcome.
Our Year level theme for 2023 is ‘Have courage and be kind’. We want to encourage the students to have the courage to create new friendships, try new activities/opportunities and to not be a bystander if they see poor behaviour from other students. We also want the students to show kindness and gratitude, to parents/guardians, staff and their peers and to actively seek to make others’ days brighter.
We have so much in store for our Year 9 students this year. The dynamic Ayin program has been developed and expanded over many years and provides opportunities for the girls to make connections with the broader community and encourages them to step out of their comfort zone and take risks with their learning.
I would like to thank the many parents of our Year 9 students who attended the Information Evening. We hope you found this useful, and we look forward to working with you throughout the year.
All the best for the year ahead.
Year 8 – Chris Wilkes, Wellbeing and Growth Leader
Welcome back! It's been a busy and exciting start to the term for Year 8 students. They are no longer the new ones at the school and are now setting the example of what it means to be a Daughter of Sion.
Year 8 poses a slightly different set of challenges. They are familiar with the school and the expectations; however, they still have new students in their Homerooms that they will have the chance to get to know throughout the year. The homeroom teachers will be regularly changing seating plans to allow each student to have a chance to meet new people and make new connections. We would appreciate your support in reminding your daughters over the next few weeks that new connections do take time to build, they do not form overnight. We have to continually put time and effort into making those first connections, so that friendships can form and then flourish. Please encourage your daughters to approach this task with an open mind and to reach out to their homeroom teacher if they are struggling to make these new connections. As introduced at the Parent Information Evening this week, the Year 8 Homeroom Teachers are:
I am delighted to be your daughter’s Wellbeing and Growth Leader. Hopefully, the fact that they have been able to have a full year of onsite learning here at Sion is of some comfort after the unconventional couple of years we have had and provides a sense of stability. I look forward to supporting you and your daughters in 2023.
Year 7 – Stephanie Jones, Wellbeing and Growth Leader
Welcome to Our Lady of Sion College! I would like to extend a warm welcome to our newest members of the Sion community, our Year 7s and their families. The first two weeks of school have been busy, with many tasks and information being provided to students. Some of these are:
First day orientation
Receiving and organising lockers
iPad induction
Getting to know new people and making new friends
Top Achievers Assembly.
Secondary school is a great opportunity for new habits, friendships and passions to form. During this time, there are going to be many questions as well as times where support may be needed. I encourage both Year 7 students and families to reach out to myself and the Homeroom team when this occurs.
As is to be expected, many students are finding the first few weeks exciting, but also challenging at times. This may present as anxiety, headaches, stomach aches, and at times not wanting to come to school. I strongly urge all families to encourage and support each Year 7 student to attend school as regularly as possible so that they may form key connections with peers and staff and settle into life at Our Lady of Sion College.
Year 7 is an exciting year of change and growth; the Homeroom team and I are looking forward to seeing what exciting opportunities each student will embrace as part of this journey.
Learning Area News
Learning Resource Centre – Margaret Lawson, Head of Library and Information Services
We are thrilled to have you back in the Learning Resource Centre, a place where imagination and knowledge come together.
We know that reading is the cornerstone of learning, and it is our mission to provide the Sion Community with the resources and services needed to thrive. In addition to Wider Reading and Research Support, we have a Makerspace, a collection of both hardcopy and digital resources and we hold events throughout the school year to support the community. Keep an eye out on the Student Bulletin for notices of events.
Temporary Library Space
At the end of 2022, the LRC Team completed the library move into our temporary lodgings for the next few years. Most students when they walk through the door now remark on how large the space is and how inviting it seems. We are grateful for the large space so that we can continue to offer resources and services while the new building works are occurring.
Library Lover’s Day is occurring on Tuesday 14 February and we look forward to formally welcoming students into our new space during this celebration.
Summer Reading Challenge
We have had over 30 submissions to our “summer reading challenge”, a reading campaign that encouraged students to read five books over the summer period and then explain those books to their English teachers. It has encouraged students and teachers to engage in social discussions about what books they enjoyed reading.
The LRC Team; Ms Lawson, Miss Valucava, Ms Branson, Mr Hannah and Miss Amadio wish the Sion Community all the best for 2023.
Literacy Coordinator – Laura Geilings
Learning Enhancement
It is wonderful to have the students back and the College buzzing once again. I hope all families had a wonderful and restful summer break. For those parents and guardians not aware, I am replacing Nicole Flynn-Jones this term whilst she is on leave. You may receive emails or phone calls from me over the coming weeks to check in on how your child has settled back into school. Alternatively, if you have any concerns about your child’s learning, please do not hesitate to contact me at lgeilings@sion.catholic.edu.au.
Health and Physical Education – Natalie Hall, Learning Leader
It has been wonderful to welcome back our students into HPE classes for 2023. A reminder that students can wear their full PE uniform to school on the days they have timetabled PE lessons. They must wear their hats during Term 1, sunscreen is always available and recommended to be applied at the start of the lesson. Students are encouraged to use the sporting equipment that is available outside the back courts during recess and lunchtimes.
A reminder that we have a bike rack at the back of the ELC building, your daughters are welcome to ride to school to increase their incidental activity and reduce their time spent sitting each day. Physical activity not only benefits your body, it benefits your mind, social life, mood and sleep too!
As we get our HPE units underway we will see students practising their athletics, testing and improving their fitness, designing fun minor games, studying nutrition and the body systems, just to name a few!
Drama – Alex Bleazby, Drama Teacher
2023 is set to be another wonderful year in Drama in and outside of the classroom!
Late last year we launched and auditioned for our 2023 College Musical ‘Shrek.’ We have a fabulous cast of students reading and raring to start rehearsals next week. You will hear plenty of updates throughout the year on our rehearsal process and later on with how you can come and see the final product!
There are a few cast spots that have been left for Year 7 students and we will be communicating to interested students soon about this opportunity. There will be many students auditioning for these spots and only a few places, please encourage your daughter to enter the audition process in the spirit of it being a wonderful experience to learn from and a bonus if they are chosen.
It's always exciting to start fresh with new and enthusiastic Drama classes. Every student in Year 7 and 8 completes a Semester in Drama and we are thrilled with the work that they produce.
As well as Drama being a brilliant subject to foster self-confidence it also nurtures social skills, empathy, effective communication, collaboration and being a part of a team. To foster these skills in classes, and extracurricular activities, we have an experienced and passionate team including Catherine Bennett, Laura Geilings and Alex Bleazby and a wonderful 2023 Drama Captain, Ella C (12 White) who are all brimming with inspiration for the year ahead.
Yet again, there will be more lunchtime workshops, theatre sports, drama excursions and opportunities to perform coming up and we would love to see as many students as possible involving themselves and getting the most out of all that Drama can offer!
The Production
We kicked off our first Shrek the Musical rehearsal this week with a very excited cast and crew. After auditions took place late last year, this was the first time the cast and crew came together. It was great to see the energy in the room with everyone ready to work hard. After our last College musical was cancelled twice due to covid, we are very happy to be back and rehearsing all together.
The Production Team Laura Geilings, Alex Bleazby, Catherine Bennett and Martin Macaulay
Languages – Gail Amato, Learning Leader
The beginning of the 2023 school year has been very exciting especially for our new and enthusiastic Year 7 language students!
We are extremely thrilled that one of our students had the opportunity to travel to Italy over the school holidays and attend our sister school Liceo Scientifico Scorza in Cosenza, Italy for a few days. Chiara P (12 Blue) is the first student to participate in the Italian Partnership Program since the pandemic first began in 2020. This once in a lifetime opportunity offered Chiara the chance to experience everyday life as a student in another country and immerse herself in the language and culture even if it was only for a short time.
This new school year marks the return of international opportunities for the Languages students with our Italian Study Tour taking place in September.
Below, Chiara has shared insight from her experience where she was able to immerse herself in the Italian culture and improve her Italian language skills:
During the summer holidays, I had the opportunity to spend a few days at Liceo Scientifico Scorza in Cosenza Italy. It was an amazing experience where I was able to meet Italian students and learn about Italian culture and the Italian school system. I found it interesting to see how our school system differs from that of Italy. Before school all the students met up at the local bar to get a caffe and cornetto before class. I was surprised to learn that Italian students go to school 6 days a week and that no one in the school wore uniforms. I was able to do classes I never had before including philosophy, Latin and environmental science. Following this opportunity my language skills have improved immensely and I have made new friends from the other side of the world! Chiara P, 12 Blue

St Vincent De Paul Secondary Schools Conference
We are excited to announce that this year we will be starting a St Vincent De Paul’s Secondary Schools conference at our Lady of Sion College.
School conferences are a student-centred program that empowers secondary age students to become social justice advocates within their school and local/wider community, by putting their values into action. Our conference will work alongside St Vinnies to build the next generation of caring and compassionate individuals in our community.
An Information Session will be held on Thursday 23 February at lunchtime in the Miriam Theatre. All students are welcome to attend.

Welcome back to all returning students and families, and a special welcome to any new students joining the community this year. For many students, they will be feeling excited to see their friends, take on new challenges, and be looking forward to events throughout this year. However, they may also be feeling worried about how they will cope with the impending workload, or anxious about the unknowns ahead.
One skill that can help all students in the year ahead is to work on developing a ‘growth mindset’. In a growth mindset, we believe our abilities are reflective of dedication and hard work and that they never stop developing. In fact, developing our abilities further can only come from taking on new challenges that push us to grow. This contrasts with the ‘fixed mindset’ in which one believes things like intelligence or talent are fixed, and once the limit has been reached there is no way to overcome it.
For students, a growth mindset encourages them to see challenges as opportunities for growth, rather than failures that reflect their own limitations. We encourage all our students to approach the start of the year with a growth mindset and to enthusiastically take on whatever new challenges will be coming their way. Families can also support their child to nurture a growth mindset at home by:
Encouraging them to seek out new opportunities
Celebrating accomplishments together
Praising effort and hard work as much as outcomes
Reframing criticism as feedback for growth
If you have any concerns about your child’s wellbeing that you would like to discuss, please do not hesitate to get in touch with your child’s Homeroom teacher, their Wellbeing and Growth Leader, or the Counselling Team (counselling@sion.catholic.edu.au).
