Principal's Message
Typically, the final weeks of Term 2 are always some of the busiest in a secondary school. Final assignments are due and final assessments under timed conditions, including examinations for senior students, are undertaken. These opportunities are designed to support students to demonstrate the learning they have experienced over the semester; to reflect on their achievement, evaluate their progress and ultimately to identify the areas for continued learning growth. I firmly believe that all students, and adults for that matter, are capable of learning growth. With a positive mindset and a willingness to adjust our approaches when needed, we can all continue to achieve our goals.
This point in time is exactly that, a point in time where we can take stock and focus on the next steps. I encourage all students to use this time to recognise the progress they have made and to set their directions for the second half of the year.
In fact, Semester 2 electives and studies commenced two weeks ago. Teachers have already outlined the work for the next two terms and students have started their first topics for the second semester. So our term break is an ideal time to undertake this reflection and ensure that everything is in place for a very positive start to Term 3. The break is also a time to then rest and recharge so that when they return in two weeks’ time, students are ready to work productively with their teachers and most importantly to do two things: firstly, to engage in all class discussions and activities no matter how challenging; and secondly, to never be afraid of asking questions. If we don’t ‘put ourselves out there’, we don’t learn and if we don’t ask questions, we also don’t learn. I ask all parents and guardians to support us by encouraging their daughters to adopt these final two messages. Our students have great capacity and a strong desire to do well. No matter what the rest of the year brings us, our goal is to help each student to achieve their best.
Since our recent return to onsite learning and teaching, we have also enjoyed many of the activities that bring our students enjoyment and a sense of belonging, and that support them to have hope for their future. I thank our staff and student leaders for their commitment to organising and leading our recent House Cupcake Competition and House Theatre Sports. On Wednesday, we were finally able to enjoy our House Athletics Carnival – a great way to conclude the term.
Last Friday a group of Year 9 and 10 students also enjoyed an inspiring Girls in STEM Day, while on Sunday the cast and musicians of our Musical attended an all-day rehearsal, the fruits of which we hope to enjoy in August. Students enjoyed many Arts competitions and GSV tryouts in the last fortnight and many have availed themselves of the many clubs and LRC events the College offers. Finally, this week, students in Years 10 and 11 attended Tertiary Seminars, VCE/VCAL Expos, Subject Selection Forums and Information Evenings, all designed to support planning for their senior studies and future pathways.
On Wednesday evening, families and students from Years 7–12 attended the Actura Marine Science School Information Evening, which promises to be an extraordinary opportunity for students who wish to engage in this unique program in 2022.
We also concluded Term 2 with an outward-facing experience: Refugee Week. I thank our Social Justice Captains and Mrs Miotello for creating the online Refugee Week Prayer and reflection that was shared with all year levels. In particular, I thank all staff and students who contributed to the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre food drive. Each year Refugee Week is marked with a theme. This year’s theme is ‘Unity', a theme that takes us to the core of our Catholic and Sionian identity and that reminds us that we share a common divinity.
So, God created us in His own image; in the image of God … then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good.
Genesis 1: 27 & 31
Loving God, we are made in your image. Help us to see the face of Christ in our brothers and sisters who seek refuge and asylum in our common home. May we open our borders and our hearts to those seeking shelter and security.
With every blessing for a happy and safe term break.
